Not only was it well-acted, but it was also the first time I had ever heard about Tourette syndrome. This movie is part of the Hallmark Hall of Fame anthology television series. Thank you for supporting this blog! “Based on the true story of Brad Cohen, a young man diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome who defies the odds to become a teacher. When Brad was growing up, teachers and other adults — even his father — interpreted Brad’s involuntary sounds and sudden jerking movements as attempts to get attention or simply acting up. He was ridiculed and teased by other kids. As a result, he hated school…until a principal learned his “acting up” was a result of Tourette’s. The principal used an all-school assembly to educate the faculty and students, which helped Brad win their understanding and acceptance. That convinced Brad that he should be “the teacher he never had.” Brad had interviews with 24 schools in the Atlanta area that had teacher vacancies, but no one was willing to take a chance on him, despite an impressive college record and glowing recommendations. But he would not give up. On his 25th interview, he was offered a job as a 2nd grade teacher. Brad’s openness about Tourette’s, his easy-going manner and gentle humor quickly won over his young students. In addition to the traditional curriculum, the students learned valuable lessons in tolerance and acceptance of differences.” You can learn more about the movie on the Hallmark Drama website. This method of storytelling works because it balances out the story. The contrast between Brad and his mom discovering his diagnosis and Brad being a well-adjusted adult thriving with Tourette syndrome also provides compelling additional layer to the story. Considering the constraints of a basic cable and Hallmark production, this portrayal of how a person, a family copes and thrives with a diagnosis feel real. Everything from a parent raising their voice to the emotional breakdowns are relatable. The raw acting brings the script to life. Patricia Heaton is a standout whether she’s being a mother to young Brad or adult Brad. And of course, James Wolk makes audiences truly feel Brad’s adversities. Popular Hallmark Posts Chesapeake Shores’ Season 6Upcoming on HMMUpcoming on Hallmark Channel Upcoming Mystery MoviesHallmark 2022Christmas in July 2022 QC Disapproved The movie packed a lot, into 95 minutes. While each scene was well-written and well-acted, sometimes the timeline felt a bit rushed especially once the movie settled in the present day. The feature is still wonderfully poignant, but sometimes the scenes play out more as vignettes than part a larger movie. Despite slightly rushed pacing, the acting is top-notch. There are a handful of real moments that make viewers want to laugh and cry with the characters. I think this is a good movie for everyone, especially kids to watch. It’s a good reminder to be accepting, compassionate, and to celebrate our differences.
